What does a Negroni taste like?

Negroni is bitter, herbal, and slightly sweet — it’s a cocktail for people who enjoy complex flavors. The Campari provides a distinctive bitter orange taste, the gin adds botanical notes, and the sweet vermouth rounds it out.

Is a Negroni a strong drink?

Yes, it’s spirit-forward with no juice or mixer to dilute it. At 1 oz each of gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, it’s about 24% ABV (similar to a Manhattan). The ice and orange peel help soften it slightly.

Can you substitute Aperol for Campari in a Negroni?

You can. It’s called a “Negroni Sbagliato” variation and it will be lighter, sweeter, and less bitter than a traditional Negroni. Aperol has about half the bitterness of Campari, so it’s a good option if you’re new to bitter cocktails.

How far in advance can you batch Negronis?

Negronis are one of the best cocktails to batch ahead because all three ingredients are shelf-stable. You can mix them up to a week in advance and store in a sealed container — they actually improve slightly as the flavors meld.
