Car camping offers a wonderful blend of convenience and adventure, allowing you to explore the great outdoors without sacrificing too many of the comforts of home.
However, figuring out all your car camping essentials can often feel daunting. The good news is that you probably already have many useful items around your house that can make your camping experience easier and more enjoyable.
In this article, we’ll explore nine surprising household items that are perfect for car camping. I hope these will serve as a useful supplement for your packing list as they have for mine. My aim is for you to benefit from my trial and error out in the wild!
The Benefits of Using Household Items as Car Camping Essentials
Cost-Effective: Reusing items you already own means you don’t need to spend extra money on specialized camping gear.
Convenience: These items are easy to find and pack, simplifying your preparation process.
Environmental Impact: Repurposing household items helps reduce waste, making your camping trip more eco-friendly.
Car Camping Essentials You Already Have
For the Setup
1. Gloves
Protection: Gloves you have around your home, like an old pair of gardening gloves are wonderful for protecting your hands during various tasks. Don’t start your camping trip off cut up and covered with dirt from the equipment set up process.
Example Uses: Gardening gloves are perfect for setting up your campsite and handling rough materials, while something stronger like welding gloves are a game changer for managing hot items around the fire, like adjusting logs or moving cookware!
2. Folding Table
Convenience: A folding table provides extra space for all sorts of activities, making your campsite more organized and functional. A small table for eating is a commonly packed item, but if you camp in the middle of nowhere like me, a picnic table is not available and you won’t have that fixed surface to spread out.
Example Uses: Set up a folding table for meal preparation, your hand washing station, daily grooming tasks, and to organize any other regularly used gear.
You’ll feel at ease eliminating the need to dig for every packed item or crawl into the tent to find things during the day.
For Cleanliness
3. Old Towels
Versatility: Old towels are incredibly useful for countless purposes! If you pack a roll of paper towels, they will be gone before you know it wiping up this or that.
Example Uses: Pack old dish towels for drying dishes and a few old large towels for wiping down surfaces, cleaning up spills, makeshift ground covers, or even padding for fragile items. Keep one in your tent entry to clean those feet off before bed!
4. Spray Bottle
Utility: A spray bottle is incredibly handy for quick clean-ups and misting. This one completely changed the game when I started incorporating it during camping trips! Not only is it convenient, but it will save an unbelievable amount of your water!
Example Uses: Fill a spray bottle with water to more effectively clean surfaces, dishes, and dirt off your body. Spray bottles provide an option for a little spritz shower for yourself as needed and great foot cleanup, all while conserving much more water than using spouted jugs.
If you brought your pup along, this is the perfect cleanup tool for them too!
5. Sunglass Cleaner
Maintenance: This one is frequently left out. But what is worse than a big smudge (or bug guts) on your sunglasses you have to look through the whole trip? Odds are wiping them with one of the old towels lying around won’t do the trick.
There’s so much to see when you’re out in nature, you don’t want to miss anything!
Example Uses: Use sunglass cleaner to keep your sunglasses, camera lenses, and other delicate items free from dirt and smudges. This ensures you can see clearly and capture all the beautiful moments of your trip.
If you don’t have glasses cleaner, fill a tiny bottle with vinegar and water. Pack 1 small microfiber towel and keep it tucked only for use on these specific items.
6. Individually Wrapped Wet Wipes
Hygiene: Individually wrapped wipes are convenient for maintaining cleanliness on the go. I’m not talking about facial cleansing wipes (I pack those too !) This is more of a cottonelle or summer’s eve wipe.
Example Uses: These are nice for general freshening up throughout your camping trip and essential for staying clean after those wonderful bathroom trips in nature.
A pack from your bathroom at home is great but I’d recommend the individually wrapped ones to avoid them drying out or the whole pack getting soiled.

For the Fire
7. Vegetable Oil & Butcher Paper
Fire Starting: Vegetable oil and butcher paper are effective and easy-to-use fire starters. If you’re trying any of our recipes, you’ll likely have oil on hand!
Alternatively, you can use cotton balls and vaseline for the same purpose.
Example Uses: Soak a piece of butcher paper in vegetable oil or coat a cotton ball in vaseline to create a reliable fire starter. By the time they burn out, you should have several logs which have caught flame preparing to cook your dinner!
8. Grill Grate
Cooking: Did you know you can easily remove your grill grate from your grill at home and take it with you?! A grill grate provides a stable surface for cooking over a campfire when you’re dispersed camping without one available.
Example Uses: Use a grill grate to cook food directly over the fire, support pots and pans, and ensure even cooking. You can simply rest it on a fire ring made of rocks and you’re ready to go! It’s a versatile tool that enhances your campfire cooking experience.
For the Pup
9. Dog Mat
Comfort: This could be an old yoga mat or something similar. A dog mat ensures your pet has a clean and comfortable space. Something as simple as an elevated mat off the ground can keep your pet from being dirty and itchy the whole time or feeling like they need to dig a hole to find comfort.
My adorable rottweiler girl loves that this is incorporated into our trips now!
Example Uses: Give your dog a designated spot to rest with a dog mat.(Outside at the campsite and/or inside the tent) It helps with cleanliness and also provides insulation from the ground, helping them stay cool or warm as needed.
Set it up in the shade near their food and water station (and their stake if they’re on a long leash). It makes for their perfect space away from home.
Tips for Efficient Packing
Packing Strategically: When packing for your trip, place heavier items at the bottom and lighter items on top. Use small bags or containers to organize similar items together. Also place things you want to access first closest to the back. For example, you’ll want the cooler closest to the back to fill it up with ice last minute. You also don’t want to have to unpack your sleeping bag first and have it on the ground as you’re setting up your tent.
Maximizing Space: Make the most of your car’s space by using storage bins and bags. Utilize every nook and cranny, including under seats and in door compartments. Pack everything you can in advance so this is not a point of stress the morning you head out.
Creating a Checklist: Having a checklist helps ensure you don’t forget any essentials. Include both the usual camping gear and the repurposed household items.
Adjusting your Checklist: Take note while you’re traveling or have a discussion when you get home about what worked or what didn’t and adjust accordingly for future trips. My packing has changed so much since I first started camping!
