Preparation Instructions at Home

  1. Scale for the total number of cocktails you would like. Combine the whiskey, simple syrup, Angostura bitters, and liquid smoke in a large pitcher. Stir the mixture thoroughly.

[Keep in mind, liquid smoke is potent, so start with a small amount and adjust to taste.  The goal is to give your cocktail a subtle smoky flavor without overpowering the classic elements of the Old Fashioned.]

  1. Pour the mixture into a sealed mason jar or a large plastic bottle.
  2. Store the jar in your cooler to keep the cocktail fresh.

If you don’t have containers and serving ware around your house you’d like to use,  REI is a great place to find them.

Serving Instructions at the Campsite

  1. When ready to serve, fill a plastic cup with ice.
  2. Pour the pre-made Old Fashioned mixture over the ice, filling the cup to the top.
  3. Garnish with an orange peel and a cherry for an extra touch of elegance and flavor.
How do you make an Old Fashioned smoky without a smoking gun?

This recipe uses liquid smoke — just 1–2 drops per cocktail gives you that campfire-smoky flavor without any special equipment. It’s potent, so start small and adjust to taste.

What kind of liquid smoke should I use for cocktails?

Hickory liquid smoke is the most common and works well in an Old Fashioned. Look for a brand with simple ingredients (water and natural smoke flavor) like Wright’s or Colgin. Avoid liquid smoke with added colors or artificial flavors.

Can you make an Old Fashioned without bitters?

Bitters are a key component of an Old Fashioned. They add the aromatic complexity that defines the drink. If you don’t have Angostura bitters, orange bitters are a decent substitute. Without any bitters, the drink becomes closer to whiskey with sugar.

Is a Smoked Old Fashioned strong?

Yes — it’s essentially 2 oz of straight whiskey with minimal dilution from the syrup and bitters. At about 166 calories and roughly 30% ABV, it’s a sipping cocktail meant to be enjoyed slowly.
