How to Get a Classic Sour Foam Without Egg

Aquafaba is the liquid from a can of chickpeas, and it works surprisingly well as an egg white-style foam in cocktails. It gives this sour a silky, foamy top and makes the drink feel more like a classic bar-style cocktail while keeping it egg-free.

What is aquafaba and why use it in a whiskey sour?

Aquafaba is the liquid from a can of chickpeas. When shaken vigorously with the cocktail, it creates a silky, foamy top that mimics the texture of a traditional egg white sour — without any egg flavor, allergens, or food safety concerns at a campsite.

Can you make a whiskey sour without aquafaba or egg?

Absolutely. The aquafaba is completely optional and only adds a foam layer on top. Without it, you still get the same sweet-tart whiskey sour flavor — it just won’t have the frothy texture.

What’s the best whiskey for a whiskey sour?

A smooth bourbon like Buffalo Trace, Maker’s Mark, or Evan Williams works great. You want something that balances well with the lemon and simple syrup without being too harsh. Rye whiskey also works if you prefer a spicier profile.

How long does a pre-batched whiskey sour last?

The pre-mixed base (whiskey, lemon juice, and simple syrup) stays fresh for 2–3 days in a sealed container in your cooler. Pack the aquafaba separately and shake it in right before serving for the best foam.
